“Those who fight today against torture, poverty, and discrimination, are not giants or superhero’s, they’re people: kids, mothers, fathers, teachers, free thinking individuals that refuse to be silent, who realize that human rights are not a history lesson, they’re not words on a page, they’re not speeches, or commercials or PR campaigns. They are the choices we make everyday as human beings. They are the responsibility we all share to respect each other, to help each other, and to protect those in need.”

Exploring Canada
Terry Fox
Terry Fox Marathon of Hope
River Elm students walked the path between our school and Elmwood High School. We had a great time enjoying the weather, getting some excercise and raising money for cancer.
In 1980 Terry fox ran across Canada to raise money for a cure for cancer and research. He raised awareness so people know about cancer.
When Terry had cancer the first time, they had to amputate his leg. He ran 5373 km over 143 days with a fake leg. There were police cars following him for safety and a Terry Fox van in case he needed a rest. Terry only made it to Thunder Bay because the cancer came back and it spread into his lungs.
When he was done running there was a presentation where Terry talked to people across the world and he received a metal. Many buildings, roads and even a mountain in B.C. are named after him. You can see a statue of Terry Fox in Ottawa.
